[00:07.17]spends every minute he can on the mountain. 
[00:10.12]He and his friends go snow-boarding every weekend. 
[00:13.96]“It’s incredible,” he says. 
[00:15.70]“The winds are so strong, the boards go 50 miles an hour.” 
[00:20.39]His friend Laura Fields agrees. 
[00:23.15]“No one goes skiing anymore,” 
[00:25.65]she says. “That’s for the old folks.”
[00:28.62]Rick and Laura are part of a new trend in sports. 
[00:33.31]It has its own language, 
[00:35.48]words such as “rage,” “juice,” and “energy.” 
[00:38.67]It has its own clothing, 
[00:40.95]such as skin-tight bicycle suits in rainbow colors 
[00:44.58]or baggy tops and pants. 
[00:46.75]And it’s not for the old or the easily frightened. 
[00:50.35]Its philosophy is to get as close to the edge as possible. 
[00:54.53]And more and more young athletes are taking part in these risky, 
[00:59.01]daredevil activities called “extreme sports,” or “X-sports.”
[01:03.72]In the past, young athletes would play hockey or baseball. 
[01:08.30]Today, they want risk and excitement—
[01:11.24]the closer to the edge the better. 
[01:13.67]They snowboard over cliffs 
[01:16.17]and mountain-bike down steep mountains. 
[01:18.80]They wind-surf near hurricanes, 
[01:21.41]go white-water rafting through rapids, 
[01:23.84]and bungy-jump from towers.
[01:25.68]Extreme sports started as an alternative to more expensive sports. 
[01:31.26]A city kid who didn’t have the money 
[01:34.23]to buy expensive sports equipment 
[01:36.18]could get a skateboard and have fun. 
[01:39.04]But now it has become a whole new area of sports, 
[01:43.30]with specialized equipment and high levels of skill. 
[01:47.34]There’s even a special Olympics for extreme sports, 
[01:51.05]called the Winter X-Games, 
[01:53.47]which includes snow mountain biking and ice climbing. 
[01:56.85]An Extreme Games competition is held each summer in Rhode Island. 
[02:02.21]It features sports such as sky surfing, 
[02:05.51]where people jump from airplanes with surfboards 
[02:08.45]attached to their feet.
[02:10.32]What makes extreme sports so popular? 
[02:13.48]“People love the thrill,” says Murray Nussbaum, 
[02:17.52]who sells sports equipment. 
[02:19.28]"City people want to be outdoors on the weekend 
[02:22.67]and do something challenging. 
[02:24.64]The new equipment is so much better 
[02:27.06]that people can take more risks without getting hurt.” 
[02:30.22]An athlete adds, “Sure there’s a risk, 
[02:34.26]but that’s part of the appeal. 
[02:36.14]Once you go mountain biking or snowboarding, 
[02:38.86]it’s impossible to go back to bike riding or skiing. 
[02:42.35]It’s just too boring.”
[02:44.22]Extreme sports are certainly not for everyone. 
[02:48.15]Most people still prefer to play baseball 
[02:51.00]or basketball or watch sports on TV. 
[02:54.72]But extreme sports are definitely gaining in popularity. 
[02:59.19]“These sports are fresh and exciting. 
[03:01.72]It’s the wave of the future.
