[07:05.98]Listen to the passage carefully and choose the best answer to each question you hear.
[07:13.68]Listening Passage 1
[07:17.37]It can be very hard for Westerners to learn the Chinese kinship terms,
[07:24.26]since they have no exact parallels in most Western languages.
[07:29.96]English,for example,generalizes kinship terms.
[07:35.44]The word uncle,for example,can mean the father\'s or mother\'s brother,
[07:41.82]or the husband of the father\'s or mother\'s sister.
[07:46.99]When Bob says,"I want to see your uncle,"
[07:51.98]I can\'t possibly tell which one of my male relatives he wants to see.
[07:58.07]The same problem arises in the case of aunt and cousin.
[08:04.44]In Chinese, however, each of ones relatives is given a definite and exclusive form of address.
[08:12.83]That is,the Chinese kinship terms are much more specific and detailed.
[08:20.92]Another characteristic of the Chinese words of kinship is repetition.
[08:28.03]For instance,the Chinese terms for father,mother,grandmother,wife,
[08:35.81]uncle,brother and sister are reduplicated like Pa-Pa,ma-ma,and so on.
[08:45.51]This is especially true in colloquial usage.
[08:50.81]However,the Chinese kinship terms
[08:55.41]are becoming less specific now that the country is undergoing
[09:01.00]a drastic change from an agricultural society to an industrialized one.
[09:08.70]Linguists predict that many of them will gradually disappear from the language.
[09:15.81]Question 1) What is this passage mainly about?
[09:23.51]Question 2) How does English Generalize kinship terms?
[09:30.41]Question 3) Which of the following is characteristic of Chinese kinship terms?
[09:49.19]Question 4) What is making Chinese kinship terms less specific?
[09:57.37]Question 5) Which of the following statements is NOT true?

[10:20.30]In fact,no one seems to know much about it.
[10:25.50]My students have helped me find out more about yawning.
[10:30.10]They agreed to be watched while sitting alone in small rooms.

[11:05.86]I also found people yawn more when they are bored or not interested in what they are doing.
[11:12.76]I\'m planning future experiments in order to find the purpose of yawning.
[11:18.14]There is some evidence that yawning is linked to excitement.
[11:23.42]Yawning is common among runners waiting to begin a race.
[11:28.69]It is also common among people waiting to make a speech.
[11:33.89]I\'m most interested in learning why seeing someone yawn makes others yawn as well.
