[00:16.20]2.1
[00:19.17]Sample Conversation
[00:22.54]1)Sometimes we have to ask for permission
[00:28.42]to make sure we\'re allowed to do something.
[00:33.10]Listen to the following dialogs,
[00:37.30]paying special attention to the colored parts
[00:42.50]and their intonation.
[00:46.00]A
[00:48.40]A:Sarah,that was a wonderful dinner.
[00:52.72]B:I\'m glad you enjoyed it.
[00:56.01]A:Uh,would you mind if I smoke?
[01:00.00]B:Not at all. Here, let me get you an ashtray
[01:05.41]A:Thanks a lot.Oh,I just remembered.
[01:10.71]I wonder if I could possibly use your phone.
[01:15.10]B:Oo,I\'m sorry,but it\'s out of order.
[01:20.20]B
[01:26.49]A:Before you sign the lease.Do you have any questions?
[01:31.48]B:Yes.Are we allowed to sublet the flat?
[01:36.68]A:No,I\'m afraid subletting isn\'t permitted.
[01:41.77]B:I see.Well,is it all right if we install our own air conditioner?
[01:49.45]A:I suppose so.
[01:52.56]B:Okay ... and can our guests use the parking lot?
[01:57.76]A:of course.
[02:00.45]C
[02:07.06]A:Hi,this is Susie.
[02:10.56]B:Hi,Susie.What\'s up?
[02:14.16]A:Is it OK if I bring my cat?
[02:18.16]B:Don\'t be ridiculous,Susie.
[02:21.84]Of course it isn\'t OK! Cats aren\'t allowed in the cinema
[02:28.32]A:I know that! But can I leave her at your place?
[02:33.44]B:I\'d rather you didn\'t
[02:36.53]I\'d have to get one of the neighbors to look after her.
[02:41.12]A:No,you wouldn\'t.She doesn\'t need looking after.
[02:46.11]B:I\'m sorry.Susie,but it\'s impossible.
[02:50.89]A:Oh,please!
[02:54.08]B:No,Susie.You\'ll just have to leave the cat at home
[02:59.77]And that\'s final.
[03:02.99]Part III
[03:12.18]Summary and Discussion
[03:15.89]3.3 Discussion
[03:20.39]1)You\'re going to hear a conversation related to Text A
[03:28.09]The conversation is printed below, but not in the correct order
[03:34.49]As you listen the first time
[03:38.28]number the speeches in the order in which you hear them
[03:43.69]The first two have been numbered for you as examples.
[03:48.88]Then read through the dialog with a partner
[03:54.29]to make sure you both have the same order.
[03:58.89]Fiona:What\'s wrong,Chris?You look depressed.
[04:03.17]Chris:I am depressed I was just at the financial aid office.
[04:09.55]My application for a scholarship\'s been turned down.
[04:14.43]Fiona:Oh no!So does this mean
[04:19.13]you\'re going to be joining the working world
[04:23.24]like the rest of us?
[04:26.32]Chris:No,I don\'t like the idea of working
[04:30.92]and studying at the same time.
[04:34.60]I think I\'ll apply for a student loan.
[04:38.80]They\'re easy to get,and I know I\'m eligible for one.
[04:44.71]Fiona:Oh,I wouldn\'t do that!Sure!
[04:49.91]A loan lets you concentrate on your studies,
[04:54.22]but it isn\'t much fun when it\'s time to pay it back.
[04:59.21]Chris:But you don\'t have to start repaying it
[05:03.91]until after you graduate
[05:07.62]That could take me years!
[05:10.91]And besides,after I pay it back,I\'ll have a credit history
[05:18.51]so it\'ll be easier to get a credit card or a bank loan.
[05:24.41]Fiona:Well,that\'s true. But most of the people I know
[05:29.90]who got student loans have trouble making ends meet
[05:35.20]the loans just aren\'t big enough.
[05:39.02]Once you\'ve paid your tuition,there\'s hardly any money left to live on
[05:46.02]Cheis:Oh,I think I could manage.I don\'t need a lot of luxuries.
[05:52.00]Fiona:Well,I still think you should look into the work/study program
[05:57.98]instead of applying for a loan.
[06:01.69]Just think:If you get a job,you end up with an employment history,
[06:08.48]and that makes it easier to get other jobs in the future.
[06:13.68]Chris:Yeah,I know, but I came to college to study,
[06:19.69]not to work.
[06:22.77]I\'ve seen how tired you get, trying to work and study at the same time
[06:29.15]I don\'t think I could manage it.
[06:33.33]Fiona:It\'s true it takes some discipline, but you get used to it
[06:39.12]Besides,having a job can be interesting.

[06:43.83]Sometimes I think I\'m learning more at work.
[06:48.32]than I am from some of my classes!
[06:52.71]Part IV
[07:04.80]Listening and Speaking
[07:08.30]4.1.Understanding a Conversation
[07:13.82]Now listen to the conversation twice, and as you listen
[07:19.90]decide whether the following statements are true(T) or false(F)
[07:26.30]Paul:Hello everybody and thank you for joining us
[07:30.80]Our topic for today is smoking.
[07:35.58]Cigarettes were once fashionable. But now people like you,
[07:41.27]Diana Wilson,are suggesting that smoking is anti-social
[07:47.64]Could you tell us why?
[07:50.73]Diana:Look at the facts
[07:53.52]Smoking causes heart disease and cancer this is a proven fact.
[08:00.71]The costs of medical care for diseases related to smoking are enormous
[08:07.31]And smokers are hurting not only themselves,
[08:11.81]but others as well.
[08:15.41]They force us to inhale the poison they blow into the air
[08:21.00]This is more than anti-social
[08:24.82]It should be considered a crime.
[08:29.41]Paul:Well,what do you suggest ought to be done?
[08:34.19]Diana:Treat cigarettes drugs and smokers as drug addicts.
[08:40.49]Smoking should not be allowed anywhere, especially not in public places
[08:47.39]Paul:Hm,thank you,Diana! Now,Mr.Roger Clark,
[08:54.07]what\'s your reaction to this?
[08:57.57]Roger:I think Diana\'s exaggerating
[09:01.68]After all, smoking has its benefits that\'s why people smoke
[09:07.89]Its been proven that nicotine produces a calming effect
[09:13.38]as well as helping you think more clearly in complex situations
[09:19.57]Besides,the tax on cigarettes increases the country\'s revenues.
[09:26.05]Diana:Revenues!?
[09:28.84]How can you talk about increasing revenues?!
[09:33.23]Smoking is such a harmful habit!
[09:37.54]Roger:Lots of other habits can be harmful too.
[09:42.53]Eating sweets,for example
[09:46.24]Diana:Oh,I just can\'t accept a comparison between the two habits
[09:51.83]Roger:Perhaps you\'d let me finish.
[09:55.33]Plenty of people including small children are addicted to sugar
[10:01.13]Not only does it cause things like tooth decay,
[10:05.62]it makes people overweight as well,
[10:09.59]and as a result they have heart attacks.
[10:13.98]But no one is campaigning to make eating sugar a crime
[10:19.28]Diana:All right,you\'ve made your points.
[10:23.07]Of course too much sugar is bad.But it only harms the person eating it
[10:30.18]Besides, sugar at least tastes good.
[10:34.67]Roger:Ah,but so does a cigarette!
[10:38.75]4.2 Retelling a Story
[10:50.74]2)Listen to the following passage twice and,as you listen,
[10:57.63]fill in the blanks with the missing information.
[11:02.44]One day, Jenny and Simon received a letter.
[11:07.64]"Dear Jenny and simon,"the letter said.
[11:12.13]"I\'ve decided to spend the rest of my life
[11:16.52]visiting my nephews and nieces.
[11:20.91]I will stay with each of you in turn.
[11:25.30]I\'m looking forward to visiting you very soon I will,of course
[11:32.17]remember your kindness and generosity in my will.
[11:37.76]As you know,my late husband made a lot of money and I\'m a wealthy woman
[11:45.54]Love,Aunt Ethel.
[11:49.43]Jenny and Simon hadn\'t been married very long and they were poor.
[11:56.12]"We must make the old woman welcome,"Simon said.
[12:01.53]"Then she\'ll leave us a lot of money."
[12:05.63]"I agree,"Jenny said "Let\'s hope she dies while she\'s with us.
[12:12.53]Then we\'ll get most of her money."
[12:16.23]When Aunt Ethel arrived,Jenny and Simon made her very welcome
[12:22.92]They gave her the best room in the house and cooked delicious meals for her
[12:29.92]Unfortunately,Aunt Ethel wasn\'t easy to please.
[12:35.54]In fact,she was a bad-tempered,selfish woman.
[12:41.83]She made Jenny and Simon very unhappy.
[12:47.03]Everything they did was wrong,
[12:50.93]and she was always complaining
[12:54.92]"I don\'t know how long I can live like this,"Jenny said one day.
[13:01.53]"I\'m working like a slave for that old woman.
[13:06.23]I cook her food, wash and mend her clothes clean her room
[13:13.63]do her shopping for her I have no time for myself at all."

[13:20.23]"Be patient,"Simon said."She\'s old
[13:25.83]She\'ll die soon."
[13:29.22]But the years passed
[13:32.51]and it looked as if aunt Ethel was never going to die.
[13:38.21]Jenny often quarreled with Simon
[13:42.91]Aunt Ethel had destroyed their happiness.
[13:47.51]Then suddenly, one day Aunt Ethel died.
[13:53.20]Jenny and simon were so happy.
[13:57.69]They were free at last
[14:02.08]"I couldn\'t have lived with your aunt in this house much longer,"
[14:09.79]Jenny said.What do you mean,my aunt?Simon said
[14:16.69]I thought she was your aunt.
[14:20.37]4.3 Note-Taking
[14:31.16]3)Now listen to a lecture on Pronunciation Achievement Factors twice
[14:39.65]As you listen, take down some notes about the following points.
[14:45.92]Today\'s lecture is on the subject of Pronunciation Achievement Factors
[14:52.11]As an introduction we should ask ourselves three questions.
[14:58.01]Why should it be difficult for adults
[15:01.80]to learn accurate pronunciation in a foreign language?
[15:07.00]Secondly,why do some people achieve better results than others?
[15:13.21]And thirdly, what factors predict who will achieve good pronunciation?
[15:20.11]There have been several research studies
[15:24.11]identifying factors that affect performance
[15:28.81]Professor James Sutter the American language researcher
[15:34.40]found four significant factors.
[15:38.40]Firstly,and perhaps the most significant was the mother tongue
[15:44.54]The closer the students own language is to English to start with
[15:51.04]the greater the chance of high achievement.
[15:55.32]Secondly,he discovered that the learners attitude to pronunciation
[16:01.52]makes a difference
[16:04.49]Students who believe in the importance of pronunciation
[16:09.48]tend to make more progress.
[16:13.17]Thirdly,contact with native speakers of the language
[16:18.76]has strong positive effects on pronunciation.
[16:23.95]Fourthly,and possibly the least important,
[16:28.76]was the students own natural ability.
[16:33.04]A good ear and the ability to imitate help
[16:37.85]but are far less significant than the other three factors.
[16:43.05]Two other factors were tested but found to a little overall importance:
[16:51.36]the sex of the student and the personality
[16:55.95]whether the learner is introverted or extroverted
[17:01.44]outgoing or shy.
[17:04.84]What conclusions can be drawn form these studies?
[17:09.54]We can\'t change the first factor the mother tongue
[17:14.53]but we can control the second and third.
[17:19.12]Therefore,we have considerable influence over our own progress
[17:25.42]with pronunciation. 现在大学英语上哪本书 新应用大学英语基础篇2 大学英语2听说教程 大学英语听说教程4 大学英语听说教程3 大学英语听说教程陈向京 大学英语听说教程第二版 大学英
