[03:52.41]1. I really need some new curtains but I\'m afraid I can\'t,sew.
[04:00.80]2. My problem is that I can\'t find a job. Managers always say my hair is too long.
[04:10.51]3. I do love listening to the radio but I\'m afraid my radio isn\'t working.
[04:21.12]4. Just look at these shoes. They cost forty-five dollars last year and they have holes in them now.
[04:30.11]5. Do you know anything about cars? My car is using too much petrol.
[04:39.22]B. Monologue:
[04:44.73]John Haslam is talking about his garden.
[04:49.62]You know, I don\'t really like the country. It\'s too quiet.There\'s not enough movement, not enough action, not enough to do.
[05:01.17]But I\'m like most other people: I need some peace and quiet sometimes,and this little garden is my peace and quiet.
[05:08.04]It\'s big enough for me.During the summor I may spend three or four hours out here.
[05:13.31]But even in the winter I may come out here for an hour or two at the weekends, if the weather\'s good.
[05:18.41]It\'s a,good p1ace to sit with my typewriter.
[05:20.94]And it\'s a good place to sit with a book and a drink. And do you know something?
[05:26.35]I spend as much me out of the house now as I did when I lived in the country.Funny, isn\'t it?
[05:33.24]C. Telephone Conversation:(Sound of radio playing. Telephone rings.)Betty: Listen, Mum. The phone\'s ringing. Can I answer it?
[05:53.93]Julie: Yes, of course. But please answer correctly.(Receivef being:picked up.)
[05:58.84]Betty: (excited) Hello. This is Betty.
[06:01.35]Male Voice: (confused pause) Uh ... good evening. Is that 789-6 double 43?
[06:06.63]Betty: Yes, it is. Would you like to talk to my mother?
[06:10.08]Male voice: Well ... I\'d like to talk to Mrs. Henderson ...
[06:13.03]Betty: Just a moment. I\'ll tell her.
[06:15.46]Julie: Mrs. Henderson speaking. Who\'s calling please?
[06:19.25]Male Voice: This is Brian Murphy, Mrs. Henderson. I\'m your newneighbor. I moved in yesterday.
[06:24.34]Julie: Oh, good evening, Mr. Murphy. Welcome to Oak Lane. Can we give you any help?
[06:29.09]Male Voice: Sorry to bother you, Mrs. Henderson, but I\'d like to ask you some questions.
[06:33.25]Julie: I\'m never too busy to help a neighbor, Mr. Murphy. What would you like to know?
[06:37.51]Male Voice: Well, first, could you fell me what time the milkman calls?
[06:41.21]And which day do the dustmen come? Who\'s the most dependable newsagent? (pause) Oh, yes ... where is the nearest police station?
[06:48.89]Julie: My goodness, Mr. Murphy. You have got a lot of questions.
[06:52.53]Look, I have an idea. Why don\'t you come to tea tomorrow afternoon?
[06:56.71]Then we can meet you and answer all your questions.
[06:59.74]Male Voice: That\'s very kind of you, Mrs. Henderson. What time shall I come?
[07:03.55]Julie: Any time after 3 o\'clock. We look forward to meeting you.Goodbye.
[07:07.89]Male Voice: Goodbye, Mrs. Henderson.(Receiver being replaced.)
[07:11.41]Section Three:
[07:16.22]Dictation.
[07:18.44]Dictation 1:
[07:20.11]Everything changes. Once a lot of people went to the cinema to see silent films.
[07:35.18]Then when talking pictures started nobody wanted to see silent films any more.
[07:48.79]But people still went to the cinema and everybody knew the names of all the great film stars.
[08:02.80]Now we have television. People sit at home night after night watching their favorite programs.
[08:20.11]But what is going to happen to the cinema?
[08:28.73]Dictation 2:
[08:32.86]Dear Mr. Scott,Thank you for your letter of 15th January.
[08:42.76]You say that you telephoned our office five times in two days and did not receive a reply.
[08:54.15]I am sorry about this, but we have had problems with our telephone.
