[00:00.00]Lesson 3 At a Railway Station
[00:08.49] Once,a long time ago,I went to a railway station.
[00:14.24]I planned to take the night train to New York and go on a journey with a friend.
[00:20.48]Many people were on the platform
[00:24.56]and they were all pushing onto th long passenger train.
[00:29.83]It was already full.
[00:33.38]I asked the man at the booking office if I could have two tickets.
[00:39.34]He answered sharply,"No!" I felt hurt.
[00:45.19]It was important for me to have the tickets.
[00:49.87]I found a railway official and asked him if I could get a place somewhere in a sleeping-car,
[00:57.73]but he said sharply,"No! You can\'t.
[01:02.30]The train is full.Don\'t trouble me any more."
[01:07.03] I felt very hurt indeed. I said to my friend,
[01:12.96]"They talk to me like this because they don\'t know who I am.If they knew..."
[01:20.04]But my friend said: "Don\'t be foolish.
[01:24.61]Do you think it would help you to get a seat on the train?
[01:29.65]There are no empty seats.?
[01:33.49]I went up to the same official and said very politely that my name was Mark Twain.
[01:41.07]But he only replied: "I told you not to trouble me any more."
[01:47.73] I said to my friend:"He may not have heard my name."
[01:53.19]But my friend said that the official had heard my name quite clearly,
[01:58.96]but that he didn\'t care,that was all.
[02:03.40]Just then I noticed that a young porter in a sleeping-car was looking at me.
[02:09.75]He breathed something in the train conductor\'s ear,
[02:15.08]and the conductor came over to me,
[02:18.87]removed his cap and said very politely.
[02:23.60]"Can I help you,sir?Do you want a place in sleeping-car?"
[02:29.24] "Yes,I certainly do,"I said.
[02:33.89] The porter took our cases and we got into the sleeping-car.
[02:39.35]The porter saw that we were comfortable settled in our places.
[02:44.81]Then he said,"now,is there anything you want,sir?"
[02:50.45]When the porter left I smiled at my friend and said:"Well, what do you say now?"
[02:57.21] My friend looked ashamed.
[03:00.77] "Well,"he said,"you were right.
[03:04.61]I\'m sorry I said all those things to you on the platform.
[03:09.86]I was foolish,not you.
[03:13.52]I\'m glad I came here with you."
[03:17.38] Just then the porter came to the door again and said:
[03:22.24] "Oh,sir,I recognized you at once when I saw you.
[03:27.99]And I told the conductor so."
[03:31.75]"Really,"I said, and I gave him twice as much as I usually give to a porter.
[03:38.41]"Who am I then?"
[03:41.44]"You\'re Mr.McClellan,of course, the Manyor of New York," he said and disappeared.
