[00:-1.00]I own a black gun with a brown handle.
[00:-2.00]It holds five bullets and stays loaded by my bed.
[00:-3.00]I\'ve always advocated gun control;the odd thing is I still do.
[00:-4.00]It wasn\'t ignorance of crime statistics that previously kept me from owning a gun
[00:-5.00]nor thinking I was immune to violence.
[00:-6.00]1. What is the purpose for the writer to have a loaded gun
[00:-7.00]since she is in favor of gun control?
[00:-8.00]I assumed because I didn\'t believe in violence,
[00:-9.00]because I wasn\'t violent,I wouldn\'t be affected by violence.
[00:10.00]I believed my belief in the best of human nature could make it real.
[00:11.00]I should transport the gun from my residence to my vehicle, but I don\'t.
[00:12.00]What the gun is capable of, what it is intended for,
[00:13.00]still frightens me more than what it may prevent.
[00:14.00]If I carry my gun and I am attacked,I must use it to kill, not just injure.
[00:15.00]2. Why did the writer choose not to take her gun along with her
[00:16.00]since she has her gun loaded?
[00:17.00]I have confronted an attacker in my imagination, not in reality.
[00:18.00]A man is walking down the street.
[00:19.00]I lock my car and walk to my apartment with my key ready.
[00:20.00]Before I reach the door,I think I hear a voice say, money.
[00:21.00]Before I open the door I hear a voice and turn to see the man with a gun.
[00:22.00]He is frightened.
[00:23.00]I am frightened I will scare him and he will shoot,
[00:24.00]or I will give him my money and he will still shoot.
[00:25.00]I am also angry because a gun is pointed at me
[00:26.00]by someone I\'ve never met and never hurt.
[00:27.00]Something makes me uncomfortable about this imagined robbery,
[00:28.00]something I don\'t want to admit,
[00:29.00]something I almost intentionally omitted because I am ashamed.
[00:30.00]3. What,do you think,is the something that makes the writer feel uncomfortable?
[00:31.00]I understand why I imagined being robbed by a man:
[00:32.00]They\'re physically more dominating and I\'ve never heard of anyone being robbed by a female.
[00:33.00]But why is he a black man?
[00:34.00]Why is he a Negro male with a worn T-shirt and shining eyes?
[00:35.00]Why is he not a white man?
[00:36.00]4. Why is it that the writer\'s imagined robber
[00:37.00]is always a man or especially a black man?
[00:38.00]I imagine standing in a gas station on Claiborne and Jackson
[00:39.00]waiting to pay the cashier when a black man walks up behind me.
[00:40.00]I do not turn around.I stare ahead waiting to pay.
[00:41.00]I try not to reveal I feel anxiety
[00:42.00]just because a black man has walked up behind me
[00:43.00]in a gas station in a bad neighborhood and he does not have a car.
[00:44.00]5. What does a bad neighborhood mean here?
[00:45.00]I imagine another possibility.
[00:46.00]I am walking with my gun in my hand when I hear the voice.
[00:47.00]The man mustn\'t have seen my gun.
[00:48.00]I get angry because I am threatened,
[00:49.00]because someone is endangering my life for the money in my pocket.
[00:50.00]I turn and without really thinking, angry and frightened, I shoot.
[00:51.00]I kill a man for $50 or perhaps $100.
[00:52.00]It doesn\'t matter that he was trying to rob me.
[00:53.00]A man has died for money, not my money or his money, just money.
[00:54.00]Who put that price on his life?
[00:55.00]6. What is the writer\'s level of comfort with killing a robber in self-defense?
[00:56.00]I remember driving one night with my friend in her parents\' automobile.
[00:57.00]We stopped at a red light at Carlton and Tulane
[00:58.00]where a black man was crossing the street in front of us.
[00:59.00]My friend automatically locked the doors.
[-1:00.00]I am disgusted she saw the man as a reminder to lock her doors.
[-1:-1.00]I wonder if he noticed us doing so.
[-1:-2.00]I wonder how it feels when people lock their doors at the sight of you.
[-1:-3.00]7. What does the writer intend to say
[-1:-4.00]when she finds her friend locking the doors at the sight of a black man?

[-1:-5.00]I imagine another confrontation in front of my apartment.
[-1:-6.00]I have my gun when a man asks for money.
[-1:-7.00]I am angry and scared, but I do not use the gun.
[-1:-8.00]I fear what may happen if I don\'t use it,
[-1:-9.00]but am more afraid of killing another human being,
[-1:10.00]more afraid of trying to live with the guilt of murdering another person.
[-1:11.00]I bet my life that he will take my money and leave.I hope I win.
[-1:12.00]8. What does "I  hope I win" mean?
[-1:13.00]Now I enter a gasoline station near my house.
[-1:14.00]A black man is already waiting in line.
[-1:15.00]He jumps and turns around.
[-1:16.00]Seeing me, he relaxes and says I scared him
[-1:17.00]because of the way things have become in this neighborhood.
[-1:18.00]Sorry,I say and smile.I realize I\'m not the only one who is frightened.
