[00:-1.00]My grandparents believed that you were either honest or you were not.
[00:-2.00]There was no middle point.
[00:-3.00]They had a simple saying hanging on their living-room wall:
[00:-4.00]"Life is like a field of newly fallen snow.
[00:-5.00]Where I choose to walk every step will show."
[00:-6.00]They didn’t have to talk about it;
[00:-7.00]they demonstrated this truth by their life style.
[00:-8.00]They understood instinctively that integrity
[00:-9.00]involves having a personal standard of morality
[00:10.00]and boundaries that does not sell out to convenience
[00:11.00]and that is not relative to the situation at hand.
[00:12.00]Integrity is an inner compass for judging your behavior.
[00:13.00]Unfortunately,integrity is in short supply today—and getting scarcer.
[00:14.00]But it is the real bottom line in every area of society
[00:15.00]and a discipline we must demand of ourselves.
[00:16.00]A good test for this value is to apply what I call the "Integrity Triangle";
[00:17.00]which consists of three key principles:
[00:18.00]Stand firmly for your convictions when confronted with personal pressure.
[00:19.00]There’s a story told about a surgical nurse’s assistance
[00:20.00]during her first day on the medical team at a well-known hospital.
[00:21.00]She was responsible for ensuring that all surgical instruments and materials
[00:22.00]were accounted for during an operation.
[00:23.00]The nurse said to the surgeon,"You’ve only removed 11 sponges, and we used 12.
[00:24.00]We need to find the last one."
[00:25.00]"I removed them all,"the surgeon assured her."We’ll close now."
[00:26.00]"You can’t do that,sir,"protested the nurse."Think of the patient."
[00:27.00]Smiling,the surgeon lifted his foot and showed the nurse the twelfth sponge.
[00:28.00]"You’ll do just fine in this or any other hospital,"he assured her.
[00:29.00]When you know you’re right,you can’t concede.
[00:30.00]Always give others credit that is rightfully theirs.
[00:31.00]Don’t be afraid of those who might have a better idea
[00:32.00]or who might even be more intelligent than you are.
[00:33.00]David Ogilvy, founder of the advertising firm Ogilvy & Mather,
[00:34.00]clarified this point to his newly appointed office heads
[00:35.00]by sending each of them a Russian nesting doll
[00:36.00]with five progressively smaller figures inside.
[00:37.00]His message was contained in the smallest doll:
[00:38.00]"If each of us hires people who are smaller than we are,
[00:39.00]we shall become a company of dwarfs.
[00:40.00]But if each of us hires people who are bigger than we are,
[00:41.00]Ogilvy & Mather will become a company of giants."
[00:42.00]And that is precisely what O&M became
[00:43.00]—one of the largest and most respected advertising organisations in the world.
[00:44.00]Be honest and open about who you really are.
[00:45.00]People who lack genuine core values rely on external factors their looks or status
[00:46.00]in order to feel good about themselves.
[00:47.00]Inevitably they will do everything they can to preserve this false mask,
[00:48.00]but they will do very little to enhance their inner value and personal growth.
[00:49.00]So be yourself.
[00:50.00]Don’t engage in a personal cover-up of areas that are unpleasing in your life.
[00:51.00]"Tough times never last but tough people do,"as Robert Schuller says.
[00:52.00]In other words, face reality and be mature in your responses to life’s challenges.
[00:53.00]Self-respect and a clear conscience are powerful components of integrity
[00:54.00]and are the basis for enriching your relationships with others.
[00:55.00]Integrity means you do what you do because it’s right
[00:56.00]and not just fashionable or politically correct.
[00:57.00]A life of principle,of not yielding to the tempting attractions of an easy morality,
[00:58.00]will always win the day.
[00:59.00]It will take you forward into the twenty-first century
[-1:00.00]without having to check your tracks in a rear-view mirror.

[-1:-1.00]My grandparents taught me that.
