[00:04.90]I had to find more friends.
[00:08.96]After several weeks in school
[00:13.14]I knew a couple of students but saw them only a few minutes, perhaps
[00:19.30]three times a week.
[00:22.46]I decided to learn a few more names.
[00:26.82]I came ten minutes early to my News Media and U.S.Government class.
[00:33.88]Two young women, one black and one white, were already there.
[00:39.96]I told myself to be aggressive and went up to them.
[00:45.00]“Hi.”I tried to be casual.
[00:49.18]My name is Liu Zongren.I come from Beijing, China.”
[00:55.26]I stressed Beijing, hoping that might create some attention.
[01:00.84]“Oh,really? How do you find it here?”The white woman seemed interested.
[01:07.57]I couldn’t understand what she meant.
[01:12.04]“I came here by plane, of course.”
[01:16.21]I must have looked lost.
[01:19.56]The white woman added quickly, “I mean, do you like this country?”
[01:25.64]“Well,I don’t know.”How foolish I was. Why had I said this?
[01:32.81]“My name is Ann. This is Geri.”
[01:36.88]Several other students had arrived by now.
[01:41.52]I didn’t know if the two women wanted to go on talking.
[01:46.67]I began feeling nervous when I realized I was standing in the middle of the classroom.
[01:53.44]Ann started to move away.“Glad to meet you,Mr.–”
[01:59.09]“Liu,”I said in haste,“Just call me Liu.
[02:04.56]My last,no,my first name is too hard to pronounce.”
[02:10.64]“Glad to meet you, Mr. Liu,"Ann repeated.
[02:15.29]“Thank you,”I said, my face turning red.
[02:20.44]I wondered what I had thanked them for,as I made my way to a seat.
[02:26.81]After the class began,
[02:30.26]most of what the professor said escaped my ears
[02:35.84]and I left as soon as the lecture ended.
[02:40.31]I had no other class that day
[02:44.30]and I didn’t want to go back to the loneliness of the McKnight house,
[02:50.75]so I explored around the grounds.
[02:54.92]Many students were entering a particular lecture hall.
[03:00.07]I stopped and checked my list of classes.
[03:04.82]It was a history class.Good.
[03:09.29]I went in.
[03:12.35]I sat in a seat away from the lecture stand.
[03:17.42]Nobody paid any attention to me.
[03:21.49]I saw several Asian faces among the crowd.
[03:26.86]I relaxed, took out my notebook, and opened the school newspaper,
[03:33.52]pretending to be an old hand.
[03:37.76]A young man sat down beside me and smiled.
[03:42.84]It was five minutes until class.
[03:47.09]Perhaps I could strike up a conversation with this friendly looking man.
[03:53.64]I started my set introduction.
[03:57.71]“My name is Liu Zongren. I come from Beijing, China.”
[04:04.08]“Glad to meet you.My name is George Christi.”He seemed ready to talk.
[04:10.81]“Please write down your name for me.”
[04:14.59]I handed my notebook to him.
[04:18.44]“You know,it is very hard for me to remember American names
[04:23.99]without seeing them spelled out.”
[04:28.06]I said this out of a desire to speak two more sentences,
[04:34.14]rather than as an explanation.
[04:38.68]I looked at what he wrote.
[04:42.56]“Is yours the same name as that British woman who writes mystery novels?”
[04:49.51]“Sort of,”he answered.
[04:52.97]Seeing me at a loss,he asked,“How do you like the weather here?”
[04:58.62]“Much the same as that in Beijing. We have cold winters, too.”
[05:04.88]“I hope someday I can go to Beijing.”
[05:09.13]“You’ll be welcome.
[05:12.08]If you wait for two years, I can show you around.”
[05:17.02]I was so very eager to make a friend of him.
[05:21.88]Unfortunately,the professor appeared and the class began.
[05:27.53]I would be sure to come to this class again and locate this friendly person.
[05:34.58]I didn’t try my luck anymore that afternoon.
[05:39.34]Instead I found a seat in the library and tried to finish some assignments.
[05:46.07]I took out my books, but my mind refused to absorb anything.
[05:52.62]I glanced around the library;
[05:56.40]some students were doing their homework;
[06:00.86]a few were dozing on the sofa along the wall.
[06:05.90]Looking at those tired students,
[06:10.04]I remembered an article in the newspaper had reported that the 1981 fees
[06:17.89]would be $6,900.
[06:23.26]How could I blame them for not wanting to talk to me?
[06:28.12]Costs were so high;
[06:31.79]they had to put their time and energy into their studies.
[06:37.15]I closed my books and began a letter to Fengyun, but couldn’t finish it.
[06:44.82]Sad,I packed up my books and walked slowly back to my room.
[06:51.48]I knew my sadness came not only from missing my family,
[06:57.24]but also from the frustration of being unable to learn.
[07:02.78]People in Beijing must be thinking I was enjoying myself here
[07:08.36]in the richest country in the world.
[07:12.61]Yet I was suffering,
[07:16.68]not because people in America were not accepting me,
[07:22.22]but because they didn’t understand me and didn’t seem to care how I felt
[07:28.88]-- and because I didn’t understand them, either.
[07:33.92]After my three classes each day,
[07:38.17]I walked without aim around the grounds like a lost soul.
[07:44.44]I had no place to go.
[07:48.40]I felt better when dusk fell, knowing that another day had passed.
