[00:00.00]Daydreaming has always had a bad reputation
[00:19.33]but now scientific research has revealed that daydreaming
[00:24.42]may actually improve your mental health and creativity.
[00:29.10]It can even help you achieve your desired goals.
[00:33.67]DAYDREAM  A  LITTLE  Eugene Raudsepp
[00:38.87]"Daydreaming again,Barb?
[00:41.56]You’ll never amount to anything if you spend your time that way!
[00:45.84]Can’t you find something useful to do?"
[00:49.03]Many youngsters have heard words like those from their parents.
[00:53.84]And until recently this hostile attitude towards daydreaming
[00:58.83]was the most common one.
[01:01.54]Daydreaming was viewed as a waste of time.
[01:05.23]Or it was considered an unhealthy escape from real life and its duties
[01:11.13]But now some people are taking a fresh look at daydreaming
[01:15.83]Some think it may be a very healthy thing to do.
[01:20.04]Attitudes towards daydreaming are changing in much the same way
[01:25.84]that attitudes towards night dreaming have changed.
[01:29.52]Once it was thought that nighttime dreams
[01:32.71]interfered with our needed rest.
[01:35.90]But then researchers tried interrupting the dreams of sleepers.
[01:40.68]They learned that sleepers who aren’t allowed to dream
[01:45.38]lose the benefits of rest.
[01:48.28]They become tense and anxious.
[01:51.18]They become irritable.
[01:53.48]They have trouble concentrating
[01:56.19]Their mental health is temporarily damaged.
[01:59.88]To feel well again,they must be allowed to dream.
[02:04.29]Now researchers are finding that daydreaming
[02:08.29]may also be important to mental health.
[02:11.79]Daydreaming, they tell us, is a good means of relaxation.
[02:16.59]But its benefits go beyond this.
[02:19.68]A number of psychologists have conducted experiments
[02:23.78]and have reached some surprising conclusions
[02:27.88]Dr. Joan T. Freyberg has concluded that daydreaming contributes
[02:33.39]to intellectual growth. It also improves concentration
[02:38.77]attention span,and the ability to get along with other,she says.
[02:44.47]In an experiment with school children
[02:48.15]this same researcher found that daydreaming led the children
[02:52.64]to pay more attention to detail
[02:55.93]They had more happy feelings.They worked together better.
[03:00.32]Another researcher reported that daydreaming
[03:03.72]seemed to produce improved self-control and creative abilities.
[03:09.41]But that’s only part of the story.
[03:12.50]The most remarkable thing about daydreaming
[03:15.97]may be its usefulness in shaping our future lives
[03:20.36]as we want them to be.
[03:23.15]Industrialist Henry J.Kaiser believed that much of his success
[03:28.95]was due to the positive use of daydreaming.
[03:32.35]He maintained that "you can imagine your future."
[03:36.35]Florence Nightingale dreamed of becoming a nurse.
[03:40.42]The young Thomas Edison pictured himself as an inventor.
[03:45.52]for these notable achievers,it appears that their daydreams came ture.
[03:51.00]Dr. Herry Emerson Fosdick believed
[03:55.21]that the way we picture ourselves is often the way we turn out.
[03:59.80]He offered this advice;"Hold a picture of yourself...
[04:04.72]in your mind’s eye,and you will be drawn toward it.
[04:09.10]Picture yourself vividly as defeated,
[04:12.60]and that alone will make victory impossible.
[04:16.42]Picture yourself as winning
[04:19.11]and that will contribute immeasurably to success.
[04:23.31]Don not Picture yourself as anything,and you will drift...
[04:27.70]The experiences of some athletes seem to confirm this belief.
[04:32.51]For instance, Johu Uelses,a former pole-vaulting champion
[04:38.41]used daydreaming techniques before each meet
[04:42.51]He would imagine himself winning.
[04:45.81]He would vividly picture himself clearing the bar at a certain height.
[04:51.00]He would go over all the details in his mind
[04:55.31]He would picture the stadium and the crowds.
[04:58.71]He’d even imagine the smell of the grass and the earth.
[05:02.50]He said that this exercise of the imagination
[05:06.78]left memory traces in his mind
[05:10.07]that would later help his actual performance.
[05:13.76]Why would a mental vision of success help produce real success?
[05:19.27]Dr. Maxwell Maltz, a surgeon and author,says this:
[05:24.05]"Your nervous system cannot tell the difference between
[05:28.23]an imagined experience and a real experience.
[05:32.83]In either case it reacts automatically.
[05:36.43]to information that you give it...
[05:39.54]It reacts appropriately to what you think or imagine to be true
[05:45.34]He believes that purposeful daydreaming
[05:49.02]builds new "memories" in the brain.
[05:52.21]These positive memories improve a person’s self-image.
[05:56.70]And self-image has an important effect
[06:00.41]on a person’s action and accomplishments.
[06:04.30]Can you use purposeful daydreaming to shape your own future?
[06:09.11]Why not try?
[06:11.10]Here is how those who believe in creative daydreaming
[06:15.38]recommend going about it.
[06:17.99]Choose a time when you can be alone and undisturbed.
[06:22.88]Close your eyes, to permit your imagination to soar more freely
[06:28.68]Many people find that they get best results
[06:32.39]by pretending that they are sitting before a large screen.
[06:36.88]They project the desired of themselves onto that screen.
[06:41.68]Now picture yourself as vividly as possible the way you want to be.
[06:48.19]Remember to picture your desired goals
[06:51.87]as if you had already attained them.
[06:55.06]Go over all the details of this picture.
[06:59.06]See them clearly and sharply.
[07:02.27]Impress them strongly on your memory.
[07:05.67]The resulting memory traces will supposedly
[07:09.45]start affecting your everyday life.
[07:12.77]They will help lead you to the attainment of your goals.
[07:17.05]Of course daydreaming is no substitute for hard work.
[07:21.47]If it’s athletic achievement you want,
[07:24.55]you also have to get lots of practice in your sport.
[07:28.55]You have to work hard to develop skills.
[07:32.02]If it’s school success you’re after,
[07:35.11]you can’t neglect studying.
[07:37.72]Daydreaming alone can’t turn you into your heart’s desire.
[07:42.00]But in combination with the more usual methods of selfdevelopment
[07:47.30]it might make a critical difference.
[07:50.41]It could be the difference between becoming merely good at something
[07:55.01]and becoming a champion
[07:57.70]If what researchers are saying is true,
[08:01.20]a life lived without fantasies and daydreams
[08:05.30]isn’t as rich and rewarding as life can be.
[08:09.30]So they suggest setting aside a few minutes each day for daydreaming.
[08:14.29]By so doing, you may improve your physical and mental well being
[08:20.09]By taking a ten or fifteen minute "vacation"
[08:24.69]into the realm of imagination each day,
[08:28.47]you may add much to the excitement and enjoyment of your life.
