head or tail从字面看可能是指“从头到尾”, 但有人说it这个词本身是个不明确的代词，可表示任何事物,尤其是一个形体怪异的动物，难以分清头尾。这一成语一般用于否定句或疑问句中，其否定形式为make neither head nor tail of指“莫名其妙，真相不明，摸不着头脑”。
